MEDITERRANEAN INSTITUTION AWARD 2005 Awarded to Recep Tayyip Erdoğan (TURKEY) An eminent personality, unanimously respected for his integrity and his commitment to democracy and pluralism, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, first as Mayor of Istanbul successfully applied modern public administration strategies to the management of the city, and later as Prime Minister has consistently promoted the political and cultural dialogue between Turkey and Europe. In recognition of the great economic and political development of a country whose culture is deeply-rooted in the East with a long and profound relationship with the West, we present this award. We express the hope that, through a further enlargement of the Union, Europe may acknowledge the end of the centuries-old confrontation between states of Christian and Muslim traditions.
